Lost Purpose - Santa Fe Trail
Depicted are abandoned wagons and buildings at the Fort Union site north of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The fort lost it's purpose in 1887 when the railroad reached Santa Fe, NM. From 1853 until then it had been the main supply depo for the New Mexico fort system and a major stopping point along the Santa Fe Trail. Without this fort, New Mexico would probably remained a part of Mexico.
